Matterbee joins the LSSA to support standards and good practice in legal AI

Matterbee has joined the Legal Software Suppliers Association (LSSA), reflecting our commitment to professional standards and the safe, secure and useful application of AI within law firms.

Membership also gives our clients a clearer view of the standards we commit to as a legal technology supplier, from protecting their information to providing transparent terms and ongoing support.

What is the LSSA?

The LSSA is the UK industry body for legal software developers and suppliers. Established in 1996, it promotes professional standards and represents its members in discussions with organisations including the Law Society, HM Land Registry and the Legal Aid Agency.

Its Code of Conduct sets expectations for members on customer service, transparent charges, data security and helping firms move their data between software providers. The association also publishes guidance to help law firms select, implement and manage their technology.

The LSSA Code of Conduct covers
  • Customer service
  • Transparent charges
  • Data security
  • Moving data between providers

By bringing suppliers together, the LSSA provides a forum for addressing challenges that affect technology providers and the legal profession.

Making our commitments clear to clients

Choosing a legal technology provider means placing trust in how that business handles information, supports its customers and responds when something needs attention.

By joining the LSSA and committing to its Code of Conduct, we want to make those expectations more visible to our clients. It provides a published framework against which they can understand our responsibilities and hold us accountable.

That clarity matters particularly as law firms adopt AI. Clients should be able to understand the safeguards and support surrounding the technology they use, alongside its capabilities.

Bringing practical AI experience to the discussion

At Matterbee, we’ve been at the forefront of securely applying and implementing leading AI technology within law firms. That work has given us practical experience of its potential and the care required when introducing it into everyday legal workflows.

Firms need to understand how client information is handled, where an output may be unreliable, when human review is required and whether a tool delivers a meaningful benefit.

We want to bring that experience to discussions with fellow LSSA members, while continuing to learn from their approaches and the challenges their customers encounter.

Helping standards evolve

A particular focus for us is contributing to guidance on responsible AI adoption and helping inform how the LSSA’s Code of Conduct develops as the technology evolves.

Its existing commitments around security, transparency and customer service provide a foundation. Building on these principles will require open discussion about AI’s limitations, appropriate oversight and how suppliers demonstrate that their tools are safe, secure and useful.

Through our membership, we aim to contribute to that work and give our clients a clear understanding of the standards we are committed to meeting.
